Signs of Alcohol Addiction

While there are many physical signs that can signal dependence on alcohol, here are some of the most common.

Red Face

If red patches around the nose and cheeks are a noticeable feature, it could result from someone consuming too much alcohol, causing enlarged blood vessels.

Yellow Skin

Alcohol directly affects the liver, and yellowing skin is a sure sign of jaundice, which can lead to even more serious liver issues.

Bruises

Skin can become more prone to bruising when platelet counts are low. Low counts are a result of drinking too much alcohol.

Weight Changes

Appetite is one of the things most affected by alcohol consumption. Overindulging can cause severe weight loss or gain through a loss of appetite or a greater desire for high-fat foods.

Poor Hygiene

With finding the next drink taking priority among those battling alcohol addiction, personal hygiene and grooming becomes a low priority. Alcohol can also cause dehydration and sleeplessness that translate to visibly tired skin and eyes.

Smell

When people are addicted to alcohol, they smell like alcohol. While they may not realize it, the smell is in their breath and on their skin.

Intestinal Issues

Drinking too much alcohol can wear away the stomach lining and cause an upset stomach, bleeding, and ulcers.

Poor Balance

Equilibrium can be greatly affected by a dependence on alcohol and cause dangerous falls. The part of the brain that keeps the body balanced can suffer permanent damage from alcohol abuse.
